West Bottoms Weekly: Rock Island Bridge Confirms April Opening with River House Restaurant
After years of planning, delays, and construction 60 feet above the Kansas River, the Rock Island Bridge finally has a confirmed opening date — and it's just weeks away.
Rock Island Bridge Opens First Weekend of April
KCUR's Up to Date featured Rock Island Bridge CEO Mike Zeller this week with the news many in the West Bottoms have been waiting for: the bridge entertainment district will open the first weekend of April with an open-house style event open to the public.
The River House restaurant will open on April 1, anchored by a team with deep Kansas City roots: Andrew Miller (Arthur Bryant's Barbeque, Guys Snacks, Una Familia Tequila) and chefs Bradley and Brittany Gilmore of Lula Southern Cookhouse. The restaurant will occupy the bridge's lower level, serving Kansas City-style comfort food with views of the river on both sides.
The upper level — featuring 55 feet of bar space — will be available as a private event venue. One side of the bridge will remain open and freely accessible for pedestrians, connecting the Lawrence Levee Trail on the Kansas side with the Greenline trail in Missouri. Trails for walking, running, and biking will be part of the experience from day one.
Zeller described the engineering challenges of the project, likening it to "building an airplane and taking off at the same time." No one had previously built utilities or cantilevered structures on a bridge at this scale, making the 1905 railroad bridge a true first-of-its-kind destination.
For the West Bottoms, this opening could be transformative — bringing a steady stream of visitors across the river and into the neighborhood.
